Ernie Starling, elder at South Main Church of Christ, offers this answer.

“In Ephesians 6:1-4, children obey their parents and the Lord. This is right. Honor thy father and mother,” Ernie said. “Fathers, provoke not your children into wrath.”

“If you’re bringing your child up and you’re trying to bully [him or her], that’s not a good thing. We have to bring them up in a loving atmosphere,” Ernie said.

He says sometimes we have to be a deterrent for our child’s behavior, and sometimes we have to take orders.

There’s always a boss.
